Escape summer with a little live theater

By Jennifer Elaine Davis

Published on June 12, 2008

It's obvious that summer in North Texas is an excellent time to catch a stage production. What better way to forget about the coma-inducing heat, the crushing smog and the legions of pink polo shirt wearing frat boys populating your regular bar than to slide into an air-conditioned theater and see some drama? You don't even have to worry about the high school kids in front of you talking through the whole thing, because you know some saucy theater broad would cut them if they did. And while going to see a play may not be as cheap as hitting up the multiplex for some bland summer blockbuster, live theater makes you feel just a tad bit more sophisticated. It'd be way classier to get the girls together for dinner and cocktails before you catch Theatre Arlington's The Boyfriend than it would be to gulp down a few cosmos on the way to Sex and the City. Not only that, the premise of The Boyfriend sounds like a perfect conduit for a girls' night: It's a sort of Romeo and Juliet set in the jazz age. Theatre Arlington, 305 W. Main St., will run The Boyfriend at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays through July 13. Tickets are $20, and group rates are available. Visit theatrearlington.org for more information.
Thursdays, 7:30 p.m.; Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m. Starts: June 19. Continues through July 13, 2008
